ACE CoP

A Community of Practice Prioritizing Our Collective Development as CSD Educators

  • How did you learn how to be an SLP educator?

Many of us have little to no serious development of our didactic (classroom) and clinical education knowledge and skills, and most CEU trainings fail to dive deeply into theory and science to develop a solid foundation.

We typically enter teaching and supervision practices armed with the knowledge of what worked - and didn’t work - for us as learners. Sure, this has “worked” for decades, but does this approach serve all of our learners, advance curricula, and encourage educational innovation?

  • Consider for a moment...

Would you ever say, “I have never had any coursework covering this particular disorder. I know nothing about the mechanism nor best evidence regarding how to treat, but can you give me some links so I can work with this patient next week?”

When we enter teaching and learning spaces armed only with a syllabus from the prior instructor and our own learning experiences, we do our learners (and potentially those whom they eventually serve) a serious disservice. In fact, there are many ways in which we can do harm.

  • Be the change.

Here’s the good news. Of all of the many challenges facing SLP and AuD, solving the systemic problem of under-developed CSD educators needs no external changes. There are no requisite changes in Medicaid or Medicare, insurance reimbursements, clinical care models, or the like to make a difference.

That is not to say this change is easy or quick - or doesn’t require fiscal commitments from our organizations. However, to get started, our field simply needs folks dedicated to being the change we want to see.

 What is ACE CoP?

  • In short, ACE CoP is a group of CSD educators, supervisors, & preceptors who gather with the intention to develop ourselves as educators in service of our students and those whom they eventually serve.

What is a CoP?

  • CoP means "community of practice". CoPs are "are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly" (Wenger-Trayner, E., & Wenger-Trayner, B., 2015).

Grow & Create.

It begins with your growth. What do you want to learn? What skills would be useful for you? As you develop, you can imagine creating new environments and experiences for your learners.

Collaborate & Support.

You are not on your own! Learn with committed peers who have joined this space with shared intentions. Work together on goals. Enjoy the support and camaraderie of like-minded peers as you grow.

Nurture & Impact.

This is all in service of ALL of our learners. Develop your abilities to nurture your learners through the challenges of becoming a clinician. It’s not only about content and skills…it is also about the fullness of their humanity. Imagine impacting their future patients/clients vicariously as you support their becoming.
