<image:caption>For over three decades, other health profession education (HPE) programs have been reimagining curricula, exploring the science of teaching, supervising, and learning, innovating and assessing methodologies and tools, and developing educators, SLP education has remained largely unchanged. Exploring new approaches to education is essential, and CBE holds promise to revitalize our educational programming with an eye toward meeting the needs of tomorrow's patients/clients. This long-range project seeks to explore CBE models, suggest applicable frameworks, and explore the creation and implementation of competencies and entrustable professional activities. <image:title>Current Projects</image:title>
<image:caption>Many of us who teach in the field have little to no serious development of our didactic (classroom) and clinical education knowledge and skills, and most CEU trainings fail to dive deeply into theory and science to develop a solid foundation. In its initial planning phases, this work aims to ultimately develop and assess the impact of CoPs as a framework for developing CSD educators across multiple domains, including but not limited to (a) critical, inclusive, relational, and emancipatory pedagogy, (b) the science of teaching, learning, assessment, and curriculum development, and (c) engagement in teaching and learning scholarship. <image:title>Current Projects</image:title>
<image:caption>Initial results indicate that SLP students have a higher rate of math anxiety than the general population. Furthermore, these scores have a negative impact on students’ ability to interpret results from a research article, a critical skill for practicing speech-language pathologists. Taken together these findings suggest that math anxiety may be an important factor to consider in graduate speech-language pathology programs. If this is demonstrated across a variety of student groups, interventions should be explored to mitigate the potential impacts of math anxiety. Presentations: Kaplan, S. & Roberts, M. (2017). Poster: Prevalence and Impact of Math Anxiety in SLP Graduate Students. ASHA Annual Convention, Los Angeles, CA.</image:caption>
